The Great Counselor

Many people today reject the teachings of Christ, deny the truth of the Gospel, and persecute in some way or another those who are in Christ’s body. Everyone claims to have their reasons; because they know better than God, because things have changed since the Bible was written and it’s not valid anymore, that God is a fictional character despite God being proven throughout time.

This is not a new problem, however. Even the Pharisees rejected the counsel of God:

Luke 7:29-30

29 And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

These people knew who God was. They had heard what John the Baptist had said. They knew the prophecies pointing to Jesus. But still, time and time again, they rejected the counsel of God. They simply refused to obey.

This is an important story for us today, but it gives us an example of what NOT to do. We should never reject the Bible and God’s will for us. But why? Why should we seek God’s wisdom and knowledge and not reject or neglect it? Let’s look at a few things…

I. The way of men is not sufficient

Proverbs 14:12

12 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

If we follow what men say, or we only follow the things that we think are right, then we’re told right here what will happen to us. We’ll receive the punish of death – spiritual death. We will not be allowed to enter into Heaven and live in the glory of God for eternity. Instead, we will be faced with the destruction that waits for all who are against God!

II. There is nowhere else we can go

John 6:68

68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

Peter speaking to Jesus here gives us as readers of the Bible and fellow disciples of Christ some very wise words; Jesus has the words of eternal life. As Jesus said Himself

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

There is no other way we can come to the Father in Heaven, except through His words and through His Son. There is no other path forward!

III. The penalty will be severe!

Romans 11:22

22 Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.

Those who fall, those who do not follow God’s will, those who think they are above the Bible or know more than the word of God; these people will be met with the severity of God!

However, there is hope! If you continue in His goodness, continue doing the things that God has commanded, continue seeking God diligently, we will be met in kind with His goodness! If we do what is right then, in the end, we will reach Heaven and be able to live in the glory of God for eternity!

Do not reject the counsel of God! He knows better than we do, and will reward those in the end who follow Him!
